Role Overview & Responsibilities

As a UPS Handler Trainee, you complete UPS's structured on-the-job training program before working independently inside our package center — earning full pay from your very first shift while a dedicated certified trainer guides you through every method, safety protocol, and operational procedure required to perform each sort function to the UPS production standard.

• Structured Method Training: Complete UPS's five-step loading method training sequence — learning the shelf reference system (A, B, C, D, E shelves, positions 1 through 8), the eDDR sequence reading protocol, the label-out package placement standard, the fragile and air package priority positioning rules, and the load quality walk-around inspection procedure — before performing any loading function without direct trainer observation for the first 10 training shifts.
• Safety Method Foundations: Master UPS's ten-point commentary driving and ten lifting keys before handling a single package independently — learning the proper straight-back squat lift, the pivot-and-turn carry, the team-lift trigger weight thresholds, and the mechanical-assist equipment request protocol that forms the injury-prevention foundation every UPS handler builds their career on from day one.
• Production Ramp Period: Progress through UPS's formal production ramp period — a contractually protected window during which the Handler Trainee is not held to full production rate standards while developing the physical speed and method automaticity that reaches standard pace within 30 to 60 days of consistent shift attendance, with the certified trainer providing daily performance feedback throughout the ramp period.
